MARINES HELPING MARINES
Benefitting our Wounded Warriors, the Marines Helping Marines program is one of the primary programs we support with our activities and funds we raise. Some of the highlights of our efforts include:
- Birthday Ball: Bringing in Wounded Marines, both from Arizona and San Diego, as our weekend guests, we provide their transportation,
accomodations, pre-Ball reception, and Sunday send-off brunch. All net proceeds from the Ball go the the Marines
Helping Marines fund.
- Musical Instruments:
We learned that music has proven to be a helpful part of recuperation in the Wounded Warrior program, so we reached out to the community for donations of unused instruments. We collected 2 organs, guitars, banjos, mandolins, horns, and keyboards. Packing these into a U-Haul truck that we rented, a group of MCLers caravanned to Camp Pendleton to present our donation.
- Modified Golf Cart: To help the Wounded Warriors move around the Camp Pendleton area, we bought and modified a golf cart to include a ramp in the center for wheelchair access. A group of MCL members took a trip to Camp Pendleton to deliver this and visit with some of the recipients.
- Car Donations: For some of our local Marines in need, we have arranged for car donations.
- Electric Wheelchairs: Several times we have been approached with a need for electric wheelchairs for wounded veterans, and it has been our privilege to
be able to help with this need.
- Codetalker's Yard Clean-up: Hearing about a codetalker who was struggling to keep up his yard, our group headed out there to assist.
- Furniture Donations and Moving: The detachment has pitched in several times when a Marine needs help securing furniture or moving from one location to another.
- Weekend Fundraising: Many weekends you will find our local detachment members at special events. We distribute Marine Corps pins and accept donations for
the Marines Helping Marines program.
